The Drilling Optimization Summer Student will be an integral part of the Drilling Optimization Team, where they will be mentored by senior engineers to aid in supporting Pason’s product suite and working with Pason’s customers in evaluating their drilling performance. This will be done through analyzing drilling data and creating Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to inform end-users of performance and opportunities for improvement in drilling operations. Through working with internal teams and customers, the candidate will be exposed to a variety of Pason’s products and drilling operations across the globe.

The Team

​The Drilling Optimization Team works to improve drilling efficiency for Pason's customers through industry-leading products such as DAS, Toolface Control, AutoDriller, PvT, Gas Analyzer, Mud Analyzer and DataHub. Located in Calgary, AB, the team looks to provide technical analysis and insights on the products mentioned above to assist our customers in realizing the full benefit of these products for our North American and International customers. This is done through KPI performance reports, real time monitoring, training, and recommendations communicated to the customers. The team also works with a wide variety of teams within Pason to help drive the development and sale of these products to the customer.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the creation and maintenance of KPI and performance reports for industry-leading drilling products offered by Pason (including DAS, TFC, Mud Analyzer, AutoDriller, and others).
  • Assist Drilling Optimization Engineers with special drilling projects, performance reviews, investigations, engineering analysis of downhole and surface equipment.
  • Participate in technical discussions related to drilling automation, optimization, and product tuning.
  • Use business intelligence and data connection tools to help automate the delivery of KPI reporting and analysis.
  • Visit active drilling operations to gain first-hand field exposure and operational understanding.

  • Passion for the oil and gas industry and state-of-the-art drilling technology.

 Experience

  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 suite of products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Exposure to business intelligence tools such as Spotfire and PowerBI is an asset.
  • Experience with Python and/or R is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the upstream oil and gas industry and basic terminology, with focus on drilling operations.

 Education

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s Engineering program and have completed year 2, 3 or 4 (if in a co-op program). Preference given to those in Petroleum, Mechanical, Chemical, Software or a related Engineering discipline from an accredited post-secondary institution.
