Irrigation Installer / Technician – Fixed Grid Irrigation

Location: North Otago (travel required to Mid-Canterbury & Central Otago)

Type: Full-time / Permanent

 

About the Role

Our client is an emerging rural water, earthmoving and farm development business, delivering a diverse range of irrigation and water projects across the South Island. With continued growth, they are seeking a reliable and skilled Irrigation Installer / Technician to join their expanding team.

This role is primarily focused on fixed grid irrigation systems, alongside a broad range of rural water infrastructure and earthmoving projects. Project sizes range from 10ha to 500ha, primarily on dairy, sheep and beef farms. Applicants must be willing to travel throughout North Otago, Mid-Canterbury and Central Otago.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone with a rural contracting background, strong technical capability, and confidence working with modern irrigation and earthmoving technology.

 

Key Responsibilities

Irrigation & Water Projects

· Installation, servicing, maintenance and repair of fixed grid irrigation systems

· Installation of pivot irrigators, repairs, and sprinkler re-jetting

· Installation of sprinklers, valves, radios and associated control systems

· Fault-finding and troubleshooting irrigation and water systems

· Installation of PVC & PE pipelines and LV cable

· Stock water reticulation and rural water treatment systems

· Effluent dispersal systems

· Small to large-scale pumping solutions

· Trenching, assembling pipework and connecting systems to water sources

· Working on-farm with minimal supervision

· Maintaining high standards of workmanship, presentation and health & safety

 

Earthmoving & Excavator Operation

· Operating 2.7T, 8T, and 20T diggers (low-hour, next-generation Cat excavators)

· Digger work primarily on farms for fixed grid irrigation projects

· Carrying out associated general earthmoving tasks

· Following a strict and ongoing maintenance program for all machinery

· Competent operation of Trimble 3D Guidance installed in the Cat 320 GC, particularly for upcoming dam construction and water storage projects

 

Required Skills & Experience

· Proven rural contracting background

· Experience in irrigation, farming, mechanical or electrical fields

· Strong experience with fixed grid irrigation systems

· Confidence operating excavators; earthmoving experience preferred

· Ability to follow machinery maintenance schedules and procedures

· Proficient with modern irrigation technology

· Engineering or welding experience is an advantage

· Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills

· Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all conditions

· Reliable, honest and self-motivated

· Full NZ Driver’s Licence

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team
