DEPARTMENT: BBC Radio Sussex or BBC Radio Surrey (dependant on successful candidate)
LOCATION: Brighton or Guildford (dependant on successful candidate)
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £27,600 to £37,050 pro rata, depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

BBC Radio Surrey has a rare opportunity to work with our talented team of broadcast journalists based in either Guildford or Brighton (location dependant on the successful candidate).
We’re looking for a newsreader to put together and deliver our Sunday morning news bulletins, broadcast on BBC Radio Sussex and BBC Radio Surrey, during the crucial Breakfast and Daytime shows. You’ll be the first voice many of our listeners here as you deliver the news that matters across the local area. You’ll have the ability to tell stories in a creative and dynamic way that engage with our audience.
You will also work as part of the wider BBC South East news operation.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

Working here means being part of a newsroom that values original journalism, diverse voices, and stories that make an impact—both locally and beyond. You'll have the opportunity to grow your skills across audio and potentially other platforms, supported by colleagues who are collaborative, driven, and passionate about reaching new audiences. If you're excited by the idea of telling the news that matters, through creating meaningful content that truly connects, this is the team for you.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Use a range of audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver our Sunday news bulletins to the highest professional standards.
  • Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.
  • To liaise closely with other team members and with other departments in the BBC, to ensure that output material is shared, duplication is avoided, and best practice is upheld.
  • Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
  • Reflecting the key local and national stories that matter to our target audience.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Significant recent experience as a newsreader, with a good knowledge of production techniques.
  • Demonstrate sound editorial and policy decisions based upon a clear understanding of the BBC’s distinctive news agenda, the requirements of news and current affairs coverage and the audience.
  • Ability to use technology as required, in order to gather material for broadcast.
  • Understand how a team works effectively.
  • Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • This is not a role for a beginner – you should have a working knowledge of the area we broadcast to, our target audience, and how we serve the county.
  • Demonstratable ability to consistently generate original ideas and turn them into engaging multimedia material.
  • Good local knowledge, and a willingness to work collaboratively as part of a small team.

If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
