Master Thesis - Economic assessment of a metal hydride refrigeration system for fuel cell busses

VITAL
Part-time
On-site

The Institute of Vehicle Concepts (FK) of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) is internationally recognised for the design of future road and rail vehicles that enable climate and environmentally friendly mobility while being affordable and user-friendly at the same time.

We research and demonstrate the required key technologies  and maintain close cooperation with other scientific institutions as well as industrial and political bodies.

What to expect
We want you to join our team to analyse the economic viability of a new air conditioning technology for fuel cell buses. You will analyse the costs for the production and development of a metal hydride refrigeration machine together with industry partners. You will then use simulations with real driving cycles to calculate the savings potential of this technology and subsequently determine an amortisation period. The main goal of your master's thesis will be an initial integration proposal for the metal hydride refrigeration machine in a real fuel cell bus.

Your tasks

  • Adaptation of an existing passenger compartment model and determination of the annual energy requirement of a city bus
  • Economic analysis of the components of the metal hydride refrigeration machine (e.g. according to VDI 2225)
  • Simulation of the annual savings potential with overall vehicle models (Dymola; Python) and component models (Simulink)
  • Scientific processing of the results in a master's thesis

Your profile

  • Ongoing scientific university studies in the field of mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, energy technology, technology management or similar degree programmes in the natural and engineering sciences
  • Interest in hydrogen mobility, thermodynamics and production technology
  • Experience in the simulation and programming environments Simulink, Dymola, Python, Matlab
  • Experience in creating economic efficiency calculations
  • Very good experience in creating scientific reports or publications
  • Very good knowledge of German or English

We look forward to getting to know you!
