About bp

As a leading global energy company with a presence in over 61 countries, bp is dedicated to delivering energy to the world, today and tomorrow. Across the bp landscape, we’re home to a range of brands across many areas of our industry.  For over 100 years, we’ve focused on discovering, developing and producing oil and gas in the nations where we operate. Delivering our strategy sustainably is fundamental to achieving our ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner. It’s an exciting time to join bp. From wellbeing programs to mentorship and career growth opportunities, we aim to ensure you can thrive – in work and in life.

About the One Subsurface Programme

One Subsurface is our early careers programme designed to create a pipeline of subsurface professionals. Early careers will follow a structured development offer to accelerate the acquisition of foundational technical skills, experience and knowledge, and application in the business world. The programme supports transition from university to discipline professional and provides a framework of ‘non-technical’ skills to support building personal effectiveness skills. Early careers will build their experience through challenging development assignments, grow a toolkit of transferable skills for the future, and have a dedicated network of support to help them succeed.

In most cases, this is a three-year program with two 18-month rotations, including field experience when available.

About the role

From exploration to production, our petroleum engineers (PEs) play a crucial role in bp’s field operation success. As a petroleum engineer, you’ll be key to ensuring we extract hydrocarbons safely and efficiently from our global discoveries. You’ll be a vital member of our team and support the entire life cycle of an oil or gas field, gaining exposure and experience through partnering with specialists across our business. This covers everything from evaluating prospects to define potential productivity and profitability, to developing which areas to optimize hydrocarbon production.

Petroleum engineers use advanced tools, methodologies, and technologies to collect and analyze field data, enabling effective management and optimization of base production. Working within multi-disciplinary teams, PEs ensure wells and operations remain safe, efficient, compliant, and sustainable. Key focus areas include:

  • Production Management – Maximize the value of existing hubs through rigorous monitoring and optimization of production.
  • Opportunity Progression – Identify, plan, and execute wellwork candidates; use system modeling to progress opportunities; contribute to well and reservoir reviews.
  • Risk and Vulnerability Management – Understand surveillance requirements, barriers, and mitigation measures.
  • Digital Enhancements – Leverage digital tools to document well notes and events, maintain key information for future teams, and grow digital capabilities to drive efficiency and simplification.

As a petroleum engineer, you’ll focus on reservoir and well performance, system optimization, reservoir and well management, and reservoir simulation. Alongside a strong technical degree such as petroleum engineering or a related discipline, you’ll need excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for upholding bp’s safety standards and environmental ambitions.
