Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic is a designated trade in Alberta.
Being designated means that there are regulated standards that must be met. Foreign candidates must have their credentials assessed and approved in order to work as an Journeyman/woman.    
 
Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics install, maintain, repair and overhaul industrial, commercial and residential refrigeration and air conditioning systems and their component parts.       
 
DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:
  • Work from drawings or verbal instructions to mount or place system components
  • Assemble and install refrigeration or air conditioning systems and components
  • Install and calibrate related controls (including wiring)
  • Start up systems, test lines to detect leaks, and record the readings taken to ensure that the system is functioning satisfactorily
 
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Physically fit, able to bend, stretch and kneel
  • Able to adapt to changing priorities and tasks
  • Ability to manage time, think critically and troubleshoot 

FOREIGN NATIONAL WORKERS - WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 

Foreign national workers who are experienced tradespeople can participate in the Trades Qualifier - Work Experience program to apply to receive certification in an Alberta-designated trade.  This certification allows international workers to legally work as a Journeyman/woman in their trade. 

  • Completion of secondary school 
  • A minimum of 72 months (6 years) AND 9360 hours of work experience 
  • A successful theory exam 
  • An Employer Declaration Letter
