Reporting to the Transportation Manager, the Project Manager I is responsible for the management of small to mid-sized projects. This position supervises large move and install crews to complete projects for commercial customers. This position is responsible to ensure the job must stay within bid. Any possible change orders requested by the customer need to be documented and signed by both the customer and the Project Manager.

Performs general manual labor and office furniture installation tasks including loading, unloading, lifting, and moving office furniture and materials. Assists with a variety of functions with manual labor tasks as needed. May require loading and unloading trucks from loading dock, using ramps or on lift-gates. May assist in pushing furniture, equipment, and cartons on wheels to and from trucks, offices, and warehouses. May assist in setting & offsetting goods on equipment. May be required to drive trucks up to if qualified and approved. Assists the install/move process by communicating with project managers, the end users/customer and other crew members. 

In addition, this position is responsible to train staff to ensure quality work is performed, and most importantly, responsible to ensure the customer’s complete satisfaction.

Project Manager I is also responsible for reporting and escalating any related issues about the project to the Operations Supervisor or Transportation Manager. Typically reports to the Transportation Manager, but may be given directions from the Dispatcher, Operations Supervisor and Operations Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Project Assignments:

·        Checks for start time (for next day’s work schedule) with dispatch daily.

·        Arrives at Corovan dispatch office (or on-site), in complete uniform every day.

·        Obtains daily work assignments from dispatch or operations manager.

·        Read install plans and identify starting locations, staging locations and changes. 

·        Sets, offsets, pushes, pulls, lifts, carries, and moves furniture, equipment and boxes as required.

·        Properly loads and unloads trucks from loading dock, using ramps or on lift-gates to protect goods being moved and supervises others doing the same. Completes all paperwork accurately and neatly and turns into operations daily.

·        Handles and stages product, performs detail work and trash-out functions on install projects.

 People Management:

·        Provide supervisory coaching and guidance to the daily crew assigned which may include movers, installers, techs, drivers, foremen, supervisors or other project manages as assigned.

·        To train, support, and coach employees directly accountable to his/her/their position and to maintain the highest possible level of employee morale and department productivity.

·        Manages small move and install projects to ensure complete customer satisfaction.

·        Report any performance management issues of crew to Operations Supervisor or Transportation Manager.

·        Ensure the timesheets and other documentation are completed accurately, signed by employees, and submitted by the time requirement.

·        Monitor the team for compliance on company and customer policies and procedures.

·        Partners with Operations Manager, Transportation Manager and Human Resources to handle discipline of employees in accordance with company policy.

·        Ensure established policies and procedures are adhered to in accordance with company procedures and guidelines.

·        Provide leadership to his/her assigned team and set a culture of engaging and respecting employees.

Inventory and Maintenance:

·        May be able to identify and inventory all major brands of systems furniture.

 Customer Relations:

·        Maintain excellent customer service with the customers, sales, transportation, and operation teams to establish solid relationships.

·        Must be punctual at all times. If an emergency arises, inform the dispatcher, Supervisor and Operations Manager immediately, so that appropriate coverage can be arranged.

·        Must work cooperatively with all members of the crew.

·        Must be courteous, helpful, and professional to all existing and potential customers.

 

Training:

·        Promote Corovan’s Mission and Vision Statements.

·        Continuously promotes compliance with company policies and procedures.

 

Safety:

·        Ensure the highest standards of safety, productivity and customer service are exceedingly daily.

·        Ensure crews are adhering to all safety rules; to include proper safety equipment PPE (back braces, safety shoes, safety glasses, masks, gloves, etc. required by the company or customer), drive forklifts safely (seatbelt, slow speeds, ensuring trucks are chalked and using proper plates, etc.).

·        Provide daily safety briefings (safety huddles) with crew, at the beginning of each job, to be in compliance with company policy.

·        Immediately report all injuries, accidents and claims, no matter how minor, to the Operations Department for all employees assigned.

 Other duties:

·        If also a qualified installer, installs systems walls and splines, handles and stages product, performs detail work and trash-out functions on install projects.         

·        If also a qualified and approved driver, drives trucks up to and including Class A vehicles. Must follow the procedure and complete the Vehicle Inspection Form if driving company vehicles.

·        Follow all confidentiality rules regarding any products or services that you see at a customer’s move site.

·        Follow all security rules for the company and assigned customers.

·        Must be respectful of rules at each customer site as to where to work and adhere to meal and rest period locations.

·        Must follow all confidentiality rules with regards to any products or services that are visible at the move site.

·        Promote Corovan’s Mission and Vision Statements, including promoting compliance with company policies and procedures.

·        All other duties as assigned based on business needs.

 Financial:

·        Ensure job is brought in at or under under bid. Any possible change orders need to be documented and signed by both the customer and project manager for processing and approval.

b.     May be familiar with and able to train others using various moving equipment and its proper usage such as dollies, carts, pads, straps, pallet jacks, forklifts, ramps, lift gates, and all specialty equipment including but not limited to roll-a-lifts, Genie lifts safe jacks, J bars, etc.

j.       May be familiar with project management reports such as Gantt and Pert charts and understand and interpret cut sheets.

k.      May be able to produce detailed inventories of all goods exposed to on O&I and install projects.

l.       Must be able to accurately estimate small move and install projects to determine manpower, trucks, and equipment necessary to complete the tasks required.

m.    Must be able to conduct a customer pre-move meeting, post destination signage and communicate all standard move and install protocol to the customers.

n.     Must be familiar with laboratory moving including packing of lab equipment, fine tune and detail work, PC disconnect and reconnect and must possess good customer service skills.

o.     Must be familiar with the O&I (Office & Industrial) move process and understand the move labeling and directional signage.

p.     Must complete Mover I & II, Lead Foreman, Supervisor I & II, and Project Manager I Level Corovan University training and pass the written tests.  May also be required to pass Installer I, II, and III, or be a qualified and approved Driver I or II.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Required:

·        High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or a combination of education and equivalent experience may be substituted for diploma

·        Minimum 3 years’ experience in conducting pre-move meetings, managing post destination signage, and communicating standard move and install protocols to customers or related experience.

·        Minimum 3 years’ experience estimating small to medium move and install projects to determine manpower, trucks, and equipment necessary to complete the tasks required or related experience.

·        Strong supervisory or managerial skills to lead a Transportation team.

·        Intermediate MS Excel knowledge.

·        Proficient in MS Office applications.

·        Proficient in PowerPoint.

·        Valid California driver’s license and driving record that meets the company’s insurance carrier requirements.  May be waived at Transportation Manager’s discretion.

Preferred:

·        Prior experience in a senior or leadership role.

·        Service industry experience highly desirable. 

·        Experience with process improvement teams.

·        Must complete Mover I & II, Foreman, Supervisor I & II, and Project Manager I level Corovan University training and pass the written tests. 

·        May be required to pass Installer I, II, and III, or be a qualified and approved Driver I or II.

·        Class A driver.

·        Certified forklift operator license.

PRIMARY LOCATION:

San Diego. Various job sites and customer locations.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Walking: May require walking primarily on a level surface but may include walking on uneven or inclined surfaces for lengthy periods throughout the day, often up and down stairs.

  3. Lifting: Proper lifting techniques required. May include lifting up to 75 pounds and pushing or pulling up to 150 pounds throughout the day. Pushing or pulling assignment may need to be done with inclines. May also include climbing or descending stairs while carrying goods up to 50 pounds.
  4. Reaching: Extend hands and arms in any direction, reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required.
  5. Standing: Remains in standing position if required to perform various functions of the job.
  6. Stooping: Bends body downward and forward by bending at knees or waist.
  7. Vision: Reads paperwork and records on the computer.
  8. Talking: Communications by phone, email, text, and in person.
  9. Sitting: May be required to sit at desk. May sit for long periods of time.
  10. Stairs: May also include climbing or descending stairs while carrying goods up to 50 pounds.
  11. Heights: May include working at height on a loading dock up, or on a lift-gate.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The performance of this position may occasionally require exposure to the manufacturing, assembly, and construction areas and under certain conditions require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses with side shields hard, hats, masks, gloves and/or hearing protection. Temp/Weather: Works in either 1) Office environment – for the most part ambient room temperatures, lighting, and traditional office equipment, and 2) Warehouse – may be exposed to cold or hot temperatures, and 3) Outside – may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions and hot or cold conditions.
  2. Noise: Works in office, warehouse or outside environment, with constant or intermittent noise.

 

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

1.     This is an hourly, non-exempt, regular position.

2.     Employees might be required to work late evenings or weekends depending on the business needs.

3.     All Overtime must be approved by manager before working.

 

TRAVEL:

This position requires 100% of time to travel around the local area; percent may increase depending upon customer assignment. A valid CA Driver’s License may be required for this position.
