Description

This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and servicing of all commercial kitchen equipment campus wide, including all refrigeration systems. This position also provides support for generic HVAC systems campus wide, assisting with optimal performance, safety, and compliance.

Final title, salary grade, and starting salary will be determined by the successful applicant's education and experience.

Essential Job Duties

  • Install, maintain, and repair commercial kitchen appliances including ovens, fryers, steamers, dish machines, walk-in coolers/freezers, and ice machines;  
  • Troubleshoot refrigeration systems including compressors, condensers, evaporators, and thermostats;  
  • Perform preventative maintenance and inspections on food service equipment;
  • Ensure all equipment meets health and safety codes and maintain appropriate documentation;   
  • Coordinate with campus dining services for equipment downtime and repairs;  
  • Assist HVAC technicians with service calls involving air handlers, boilers, chillers, heat pumps, VAV boxes, and exhaust systems;  
  • Perform routine HVAC maintenance such as filter replacements, belt adjustments, and temperature control checks;
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used;
  • Coordinate with trades and building schedules;  
  • Coordinate projects involving outside contractors;  
  • Monitor inventory;  
  • Submit estimates;  
  • Handle refrigerants/oil according to EPA standards/safety;  
  • Maintain and monitor work space and quality control;  
  • Support other skilled trades;
  • Support energy efficiency and building automation initiatives as directed;  
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
 
ADDITIONAL DUTIES: 
Maintain availability for after-hours call-in.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models;
  • Ability to interpret drawings and schematics;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, parents, visitors, vendors, volunteers, contractors, and the general public;
  • Knowledge of local contacts in the trade to aid in problem solving;
  • Knowledge of and skills to operate various HVAC/refrigeration testing and repair equipment;
  • Ability to install complete HVAC systems ranging from small residential to large commercial;
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
  • Knowledge of systems analysis and systems evaluation activities;
  • Knowledge of related mechanisms and mechanics involved, including machines and tools used;
  • Knowledge of building and construction materials, methods, and tools;
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology;
  • Knowledge of computers and electronics involved, including circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, computer hardware/software, and related applications/programming;  
  • Dependability, attention to detail, cooperation, analytical thinking, initiative, adaptability/flexibility, and leadership skills;
  • Detailed knowledge of all aspects of kitchen equipment;
  • Ability to schedule PM’s and repairs of kitchen equipment with food service vendor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a high school diploma/equivalent is required;
  • Completion of an associate's degree in related field, preferred;
  • Seven years of related experience, required;
  • Experience in a university, hospital, or similar institutional setting is preferred.

 LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:  
  • Valid driver's license, required;
  • EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Handling Certification (Type I & II or Universal).
