Metrolinx is inviting passionate professionals to join our Transit System Safety Assurance (SSA) team, supporting the organization in delivering safe and reliable assets and operations. The Transit System Safety Assurance team is responsible for oversighting the implementation of Metrolinx SSA Governance Framework which provides progressive assurance leading to demonstrate that all new or changed transit systems in Metrolinx are safe for operation.  

We are growing our dynamic team of Safety and System Assurance leaders at all levels to play a pivotal role in driving system safety assurance culture for infrastructure development and operations readiness at Metrolinx. Safety and System Assurance professionals are at the heart of ensuring that all Metrolinx projects and operations are subject to specification and demonstration of reliability, availability, maintenance and safety (RAMS) standards. Whether leading the implementation of safety risk management frameworks, oversighting hazard analyses and assessments, setting standard assurance criteria or enabling informed decision making, your work will be instrumental in delivering world-class transit systems. You will:  

  • Shape the Future of Safety & Assurance – Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and implement cutting-edge safety and system assurance standards that drive excellence and innovation across Metrolinx.
     
  • Ensure Compliance & Excellence – Lead in-depth safety and system assurance assessments, ensuring alignment with Metrolinx’s framework, provincial and federal regulations, international standards, and best practices in common safety methods.
     
  • Champion Risk Management – Drive the strategic application of safety risk management principles to assess and enhance safety initiatives, optimizing value for money while meeting high-profile objectives in a fast-paced, evolving, and customer-centric environment.
     
  • Lead Complex Risk Assessments – Plan and execute within high-performing teams to conduct intricate safety risk assessments across multiple projects, including system safety assessments, hazard management, compliance verification, and coordination with independent safety assessors—all in alignment with project agreements and industry standards.
     
  • Drive Compliance & Assurance – Oversee skilled teams in implementing and conducting comprehensive safety and system assurance assessments, ensuring full adherence to Metrolinx’s framework, legislative requirements, and international safety benchmarks.
     
  • Be a Trusted Safety Advisor – Provide expert guidance to project delivery teams and leadership, shaping best-in-class safety and system assurance processes that align with industry-leading standards, regulatory mandates, and best practices.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need? 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems, Safety, Engineering, or a related discipline preferred and a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.  
  • Training in application of systems engineering processes, common safety methodology, safety risk assessment and hazard management, or related railway application of international standards (e.g., ISO 15288, ERA CSM, CSA CMREA, EN 50126,-128,-129, ORR RM3, ISO 31000, Yellow book, iESM safety method) is an asset. 
  • Demonstrated experience with safety and system assurance, system audit, preferably in a public transit environment and for the implementation of ERA CSM or EN 50126,-128,-129 CENELEC standards. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of legislative and regulatory requirements governing safety and system assurance related to the rail, bus, and construction industry 
  • Experience on risk management systems and processes to identify and mitigate system safety risks 
  • Knowledge of business improvement processes, standards, and performance analytics for safety regulatory elements. 
  • Experience in development and maintenance of leading and lagging key performance indicators, identifying trends and opportunities for improvement. 
  • Ability to present and persuasively communicate at all levels of the business and external stakeholders 
  • Experience in developing safety audit and compliance policies, procedures, processes, tools and training based on industry best practice. 
  • Proficiency in MS Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
