The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Calgary, AB team on a permanent full-time basis. This role will lead and manage complex geotechnical engineering projects from concept through completion.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, proven leadership capabilities, and a track record of delivering high-quality, sustainable geotechnical solutions across municipal, commercial, industrial, and residential sectors. This individual will play a key role in client relationship management, mentoring junior staff, and supporting business development efforts within the Geotechnical Discipline.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the design and execution of geotechnical engineering projects, including shallow/deep foundations, retaining structures, slope stability, excavations, shoring, and earthworks.
- Perform advanced geotechnical analyses, numerical modeling, and simulations for complex ground and structural interactions.
- Oversee and conduct geotechnical site investigations, including drilling, test pitting, directing field staff, and detailed logging of soil and rock conditions.
- Prepare comprehensive engineering reports, proposals, technical specifications, and detailed design drawings.
- Conduct construction reviews and provide field engineering support to ensure adherence to design intent, regulatory requirements, and quality standards.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, EITs, geoscientists, and technologists, fostering technical development and career growth.
- Manage project scope, budgets, schedules, and resources to ensure successful and profitable project delivery.
- Ensure all deliverables comply with municipal, provincial, and federal codes and standards (e.g., BC Building Code, MMCD).
- Lead business development efforts, including proposal preparation, fee estimates, and identification of new project opportunities.
- Review and professionally stamp engineering drawings, reports, and other deliverables.
- Provide expert technical advice and solutions for complex geotechnical challenges.
- Participate in interdisciplinary coordination to integrate geotechnical designs with civil, structural, and environmental components.
- Implement quality assurance and control processes for all geotechnical deliverables.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices.
- Utilize advanced geotechnical software (e.g., GeoStudio suite—Slope/W, Seep/W, Sigma/W; WALLAP; Plaxis) for analysis and design.
- Oversee and interpret laboratory testing programs for soil and rock samples.
- Support strategic planning and growth initiatives within the Geo Hydro Discipline.
- Represent Ecora at industry conferences, events, and client engagements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering (with geotechnical specialization), or related field; Master’s degree strongly preferred.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta, or immediately eligible for registration.
- Minimum 10+ years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience, ideally in a consulting environment.
- Strong technical knowledge in soil mechanics, rock mechanics, foundation design, slope stability, seismic design, excavations, shoring, and earthworks.
- High proficiency with geotechnical software and familiarity with diverse field investigation methods.
- Thorough understanding of Canadian geotechnical codes, standards, and construction practices.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and deliver geotechnical projects from inception to completion.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience mentoring and developing engineering staff.
- Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proven client-focused approach with strong relationship-building skills.
- Business development experience, including proposal and fee estimate preparation.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites and meetings as required.
