Job Overview: We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Counselor to join our school community. This individual will provide mental health support to students by offering counseling services, crisis intervention, and educational resources. The ideal candidate will help create a safe and supportive environment for students to improve their emotional, social, and academic well-being. The candidate will support the mission and beliefs of the school community.
Key Responsibilities:
Individual Counseling: Provide one-on-one counseling to students dealing with emotional, behavioral, social, or academic challenges.
Group Counseling: Facilitate group counseling sessions for students on topics such as stress management, peer relationships, coping skills, and other relevant issues.
Crisis Intervention: Respond to and manage crisis situations involving students, providing immediate support and intervention when necessary.
Assessment and Evaluation: Conduct assessments to identify students' emotional, psychological, and behavioral needs and create individualized treatment plans.
Collaboration with Staff:
Work closely with teachers, administrators, and parents to ensure students receive appropriate support and interventions.
Provide guidance on classroom management strategies and social-emotional learning.
Serve as a part of the Student Support Team when needed, supporting the RTI process.
Preventative Programs: Develop and implement programs to promote mental health awareness, coping strategies, and resilience among students. Assist with the implementation of the Signs of Suicide program.
Referral Services: Make referrals to external mental health professionals or community resources when necessary.
Documentation: Maintain accurate records of counseling sessions, student progress, and communications with parents, guardians, and external providers.
Confidentiality: Ensure all counseling services are provided in a confidential and ethical manner in accordance with school policies and relevant laws.
Professional Development: Provide professional development to the staff when needed regarding mental health in general, strategies to support social emotional well being for both staff and students, etc.
Qualifications:
Education: Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
Licensure: Valid and current state licensure as a Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or similar (depending on state requirements).
Experience: Previous experience working with children or adolescents in a counseling or therapeutic setting is preferred.
Skills:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to build trusting relationships with students, staff, and parents.
Knowledge of mental health disorders, crisis intervention, and counseling techniques.
Experience with group counseling and psychoeducation.
Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information.
Additional Information:
This position may require occasional after-school or evening hours for parent meetings or school events.
