Aboriginal Youth Worker – Out of Home Care (50D)

SWAMS currently has a vacancy for a suitably experienced Aboriginal Youth Worker for a 6-month maternity leave contract in our Bunbury office.

SWAMS are dedicated to enhancing employment opportunities and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This position is designated under Section 50 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA), and as such, only Aboriginal people are eligible to apply.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed person, who identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, to fulfil an exciting new opportunity as the Aboriginal Youth Worker in our Out of Home Care.

The Aboriginal Youth Worker will, as part of a holistic team, work closely with young people, generally in early teenage years, to provide unique insights, mentorship, and support in their personal growth, intercultural understanding, and social development, emphasising the importance of culture and respect. They will arrange, facilitate and support activities for young people which provide this opportunity. They may also work with Cultural Practice Advisor to support the smooth transition of young people in care to their independence. This is a varied role with a great purpose which will include the following, but not be limited to:

• Utilises observational and evaluation skills to contribute to the assessment of a young person’s needs.

• Implements strategies identified in the care plan and participates in review of care plans to ensure young people have clear, relevant and achievable outcomes.

• Builds a trusted partnership with foster carers and their foster young people and family

• Engages with ATSI community members respecting the privacy and dignity of the family and young people

• Prepares and maintains confidential records as required

Essential

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and contemporary issues affecting them.

• Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with communities, families, children and young people.

• Sound interpersonal skills and the ability to proactively establish and sustain effective stakeholder relationships.

• Sound written skills, including report writing

• Demonstrated ability to manage own time and work resources.

• Ability to work effectively as a team member.

Desirable

• Possession of or substantial progress toward a relevant qualification at tertiary, diploma or certificate level or relevant lived experience and willingness to complete further education.
