CEWD Part-Time Instructor, Crane, Rigging & Signal Person

Hourly rate will be determined based on market rate, experience and discipline. 

This is a Part-Time Staff Pool in our Continuing Education Workforce Development (CEWD) department for available assignments during the academic year. The Cranes, Rigging, and Signalperson Instructor provides classroom and hands-on instruction in crane operations, preparing students for safe, effective work in OSHA CFR 29.1910-General Industry and OSHA CFR 29.1926-Construction environments. The instructor is responsible for delivering curriculum aligned with federal safety regulations and industry-recognized standards, reinforcing competencies such as load chart interpretation, crane configuration, rigging, signaling, inspections, and lift planning. This position supports the development of workforce-ready individuals in high-demand skilled trades.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

INSTRUCTIONAL DELVERY

• Deliver both theory-based and practical instruction in cranes, rigging, and signalperson and safety procedures.
• Guide students through equipment set-up, assembly/disassembly, operations, communication practices, and shutdown procedures.
• Facilitate learning on advanced topics such as rigging plans, job site hazard mitigation, perform real world crane, rigging, and signalperson operations. 

STUDENT ASSESSMENT & SUPPORT

• Proctor student performance using written exams and practical assessments aligned with national certification standards.
• Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and certification readiness.
• Provide constructive feedback, individualized coaching, and supplemental instruction as needed.

CURRICULUM & COMPLIANCE

• Implement and continuously update instruction to align with Occupational Safety and Health Administration and American National Standards Institute/American Society of Mechanical Engineers standards.
• Ensure all instructional practices comply with applicable safety protocols and certification requirements.
• Monitor and maintain training yard safety, including oversight of operational equipment and practical areas (practicum).

PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of crane operation standards, equipment, and certification testing procedures.
• Engage with industry partners, advisory boards, or professional networks to support student success and program development.
• Participate in program meetings, professional development, and college-sponsored events as required.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Adheres to Alvin College’s policies and procedures.
• Attends institutional meetings as required.  
• Other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The position requires indoor and outdoor instruction in various weather conditions, including physical activity in construction training areas. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The instructor must be able to lift 50 pounds, climb onto equipment, and stand or walk for extended periods. Frequent use of hands, vision, and verbal communication is required for instruction and equipment operation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 3-5 years of experience as crane inspector, crane operator, rigger, signalperson, lift director, planner, or heavy equipment operator. 
• Current certification as a crane operator or NCCCO certified mobile crane operator in at least one of the following type of cranes: LAT, TSS, or TLL. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Basic computer proficiency using Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
• Basic proficiency in online tools such as Blackboard
• Strong knowledge of regulatory standards governing cranes, rigging, signalperson, and safety.
• Ability to teach adult learners in both classroom and outdoor environments.
• Comprehensive understanding of lift planning, crane operations, capabilities, limitations, and hazard identification.
• Ability to explain technical concepts in clear, concise language for diverse learners.
• Skilled in operating and demonstrating multiple types of cranes, rigging methodologies, and signaling.
• Strong organizational skills, including documentation, and instructional preparation.
• Commitment to fostering an inclusive, safety-conscious learning environment.
• The instructor will frequently perform autonomously and must be self-motivated
• Will be required to proceed with independent actions with mutually established guidelines and minimal supervision from the Program Director
• Must be flexible with the ability to work days, nights, and/or weekends with the understanding that available hours will be based on the needs of the program not to exceed 19 hours per week
• Must be flexible and understands a minimum number of hours is not guaranteed and that classes may be cancelled and/or rescheduled with minimal notice due to student need, student enrollment and/or program needs

• Minimum six months experience instructing or mentoring in a vocational, trade, or workforce development program.
