POSITION TITLE:  FS REFRIGERATION MECHANIC AND EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN 

REPORTS TO:  COORDINATOR OF FOOD SERVICE

OVER-TIME STATUS:  NON-EXEMPT PAY GRADE: 

 

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs intermediate skilled work with the maintenance and repair of commercial food service equipment; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the coordinator of food services or designee. Perform intermediate skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and installation of refrigeration equipment in school buildings. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Plans, coordinates, supervises, and performs a variety of skilled duties installing, repairing, and maintaining commercial gas/electric heating, cooking, and sanitizing equipment.
  • Coordinates and supervises the work of outside contractors when needed.
  • Troubleshoots, tests, repairs, calibrates, maintains, or modifies commercial food service equipment.
  • Installs new equipment to conform to design standards and kitchen layout requirements.
  • Keep records, and complete required forms and reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Requests assistance and direction when needed.
  • Performs preventive maintenance activities on a regular basis.
  • Operates and maintains necessary hand tools, power tools, and equipment to ensure the safety of the work area.
  • Requisitions parts and materials from vendors and supply houses.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, install and maintain refrigeration equipment; maintain records and files; prepare reports.
  • Install new refrigeration equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, adjustments, and repairs on refrigeration equipment.
  • Replace and/or repair electrical controls, and recover refrigerant.
  • Check, rewire, and replace electrical components such as contactors, capacitors, relays,
  • switches, lights, etc.
  • Replace refrigeration compressor and evaporator coils.
  • Complete assigned work orders and necessary work order reports.
  • Install, adjust, and replace electric and electronic thermostats.
  • Detect and repair leaks in pipes and valves.
  • Operate tools and equipment associated with this trade.
  • Coordinate work with other crews from various shops as required.
  • Determine job requirements by reading and interpreting schematics, plans, specifications and drawings.
  • Operate a school district vehicle to and from work locations and maintain par levels of tools, parts, and materials on the vehicle in an organized fashion.
  • Estimate and procure materials, supplies, and equipment from vendors per PPS policies and procedures.
  • Perform related work as required.
  • Must be able to work extended hours and weekends when required for emergency repairs of equipment. 

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Thorough knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practice and tools used in the food service equipment trade; thorough knowledge of the electrical, natural gas, and liquid propane regulations and codes; thorough knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions; ability to troubleshoot, test, repair, calibrate, maintain or modify heating, cooking, cooling and sanitizing food systems and equipment; ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; ability to supervise the work of others; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with associates. 

 

Thorough knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the refrigeration trade; thorough knowledge of a variety of refrigeration control systems, including design, operation, maintenance, repair, and parts variations. Basic math proficiency, aptitude to learn new technology, and how to estimate time and materials needed for small jobs.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by completion of appropriate apprenticeship food service equipment training. considerable experience in refrigeration, plumbing, or related trade. Considerable experience in refrigeration, plumbing, or related trade. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. CFC Certification is required.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
