Introduction

The Incumbent will be responsible for calibration, validation and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Installation and maintenance of commissioning of monitoring systems. Prescribe appropriate procedure and advice business on the purchase of equipment in order to ensure quality requirements. Supervise and undertake the maintenance, repair installation of all refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. Support the installation and commissioning and validation of all refrigeration and air conditioning. Provide emergency after hours services for SANBS in all the regions.

Duties & Responsibilities

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS (KPAS) 

KPA 1: Manage The Calibration And Validation Of SANBS Laboratory Equipment To Ensure Compliance With Sans 17025 Standard For Calibration Laboratories 
KPI 
1.1. Create and validate calibration methods for the specific laboratory equipment or adopt standard methods and validate as required to ensure suitability to relevant equipment and laboratory. 
1.2. Manage the calibration of reference equipment and the traceability to the International systems of Units and control reference to ensure valid results. 
1.3. Manage calibration accreditation for both the calibration laboratory and the sites. 
1.4. Manage inter laboratory comparison as required by SANS17025. 
1.5. Manage internal Audit accordance with a predetermined schedule and procedure. 
1.6. Manage and implement internal audit findings to improve customer services and quality of work. 
1.7. Maintain laboratory standards ensure traceability to national standard and validity of results. 
1.8. Update, modify existing SOP’s relating to cold chain equipment, calibration of equipment, equipment handling and monitoring systems. 

KPA 2: Supervise And Undertake The Maintenance, Repair And Installation Of All Cold Chain Equipment Air Conditioning Systems And Laboratory Equipment 
KPI 
2.1. Schedule service at regular intervals using SAP Plant maintenance technology. 
2.2. Delegate or personally handle scheduled and urgent repair work. 
2.3. Arrange rebuilding or refurbishing of air conditioner units. 
2.4. Supervise related electrical connections and specialises in freezer room and Ultralow cooling systems. 
2.5. Ensure all issued certificate of conformity (COC) are valid as per SANS 10147. 
2.6. Inspect any work done by outside contractors. 
2.7. Training and certification of end user’s o newly installed technology. 
2.8. Develop new SOP’s due to changes in compliance. 

KPA 3: Maintain, Install And Modify Cold Chain Equipment And Laboratory Equipment To Satisfy SANBS Requirement 
KPI 
3.1. Assess cold chain requirements with users. 
3.2. Calculate designed and insulation requirement with help of outside specialist (where required). 
3.3. Determine appropriate gas requirements for system idea operations. 
3.4. Suggest and evaluate laboratory equipment to suit SANBS requirements. 
3.5. Install and calibrate monitoring equipment for cold chain equipment. 
3.6. Carry out routine inspection and maintenance of all applicable equipment to ensure that the equipment operate within the desired and recommended specification. 
3.7. Ensure that methods used in calibration, verification and maintenance are in accordance with the recommended procedure by manufacturer and by standards. 
3.8. Evaluate, revise maintenance and calibration methods to keep abreast with technology. 
3.9. Validate installation of monitoring systems to ensure that they meet requirements. 
3.10. Ensure that the maintenance and calibration of equipment in accordance the schedule and that the calibration is valid. 

KPA 4: Ensure That Maintenance Administration Is Undertaken Effectively And Efficiently 
KPI 
4.1. Meet with Head of maintenance on a regular basis to establish work requirements and future plans for the organisation. 
4.2. Provide advice on feasibility of proposed projects by estimating and costing of materials and labour, taking future expansion into consideration. 
4.3. Undertake accurate record keeping of laboratory equipment. 
4.4. Verification, certification testing and inspection of instrumentation. 
4.5. Manage the customer requirements and complains to improve services of the laboratory. 
4.6. Install, validate monitoring systems to ensure that all the requirements are meet as per user. 
4.7. Keep abreast of product and industrial knowledge. 

KPA 5: Ensure That Tools Allocation, Equipment Is Maintained 
KPI 
5.1. Ensure that only valid equipment is available for calibration to ensure the validity of calibration. 
5.2. Order necessary material and spares on time for current jobs or replenish inventory removed from stock. 
5.3. Oversee the management of the lifespan of tools and equipment through maintenance and correct handling of equipment. 
5.4. Ensure validity of results by evaluating equipment when equipment has been used for calibration or validation at sites other than the laboratory. 
5.5. Ensure that staff are trained on equipment handling and all the procedures required to perform their duties. 

KPA 6: Supervise Staff To Ensure Good Relations , Team Work Staff Development And A Professional Service Delivery 
KPI 
6.1. Monitor and authorise staff leave and sick leave. 
6.2. Scrutinize staff overtime and submit to HOD. 
6.3. Supervise internal projects and allocate work requisitions. 
6.4. Conduct performance management and monitor performance on ongoing basis through mentoring, coaching, and reviews according to agreed time frames and take appropriate steps to correct problems. 
6.5. Track and drive individual development plans by identifying training and staff development needs and ensure that staff attend. 
6.6. Ensure competence of all staff who operate specific equipment and perform calibrations, and tests. 
6.7. Evaluate results and sign the reports and calibration certificate. 
6.8. Formulate and manage laboratory goals with respect to education and training and skill development of staff. 
6.9. Deal with grievances, conflict and disciplinary issues and take appropriate correct actions in accordance with SANBS policy on matters related to misconduct and incapacity (performance and ill health) with view to improving productivity. 
6.10. Recruit and select suitable candidates according to man-power plans and HCW procedures and EE targets. 

KPA 7: Manage Contracts, Contracted Work, Operational Budget, Capex Budget, Training And Development Of Staff 
KPI 
7.1. Manage contracts for cold chain, monitoring system calibration of reference equipment and renew as per procurement and legal department. 
7.2. Manage contractor works for Hvac system and monitoring systems to ensure that work is completed on time and according to the specifications. 
7.3. Design specification for Hvac system and ventilation according to regulations and SANBS requirement. 
7.4. Plan and implement upgrades for calibration and cold chain equipment with the head of maintenance to continuously improve systems. 
7.5. Manage and maintain health and safety standards for instrumentation and refrigeration staff in the workshop. 
7.6. Manage the travelling to all the zone to inspect all the sites for improvement and upgrades cold chain equipment.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Education 
  • Grade 12 
  • National Diploma Electrical or Technical or Diploma Refrigeration or Instrumentation Diploma 
  • Drivers licence 
  • Registered refrigeration practitioner is preferable
Experience and knowledge requirements 
  • 5 - 10 Years’ experience in a supervisory position or 5 – 10 years’ specialised refrigeration or instrumentation and maintenance 
  • Electrical and electronic control in refrigeration or instrumentation 
  • Include technical signatory as preferred
Other (knowledge and skills), 
  • Understanding and application of relevant heating and ventilation, air conditioning and  refrigeration legislation. 
  • Certified and registered metrologist as per Metcert program or B-tech Metrology through recognised institution. 
  • Cold chain management. 
  • Technical signatory as per SANAS requirement. 
  • Comply with regulatory requirement, SHEQ, SOP.
