Qualified Rigger

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Lifting & Rigging Operations
• Plan and execute safe lifting operations using cranes, hoists, and chain blocks.
• Select appropriate slings, shackles, spreader bars, and lifting gear based on load weight and center of gravity.
• Perform pre-lift inspections of equipment (SWL checks, damage assessment).
• Assist crane operators with load positioning, signaling, and blind lifts.
• Safety & Compliance
• Follow Lifting Equipment Regulations (SANS/OSHA/MHSA standards).
• Comply with Permit-to-Work (PTW) and fall protection requirements.
• Conduct risk assessments (Job Safety Analysis - JSA) before lifts.
• Equipment Handling
• Rig and move heavy machinery, pressure vessels, and structural steel.
• Use lever hoists, tirfors, and hydraulic jacks for precise load positioning.
• Secure loads for transport (flatbeds, low-loaders).
• Team Coordination
• Work with crane operators, banksmen, and supervisors to ensure safe lifts.
• Communicate clearly using hand signals and radio comms.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

• Mandatory Certifications
• Rigger Trade Certificate (NQF Level 3 or higher)
• LMI (Lifting Machinery Inspector) certification (advantageous)
• Slinging & Rigging Training (SANS/OSHA compliant)
• Crane & Lifting Operations (COMSOC 1 & 2 for mining, if applicable)
• Safety Certifications
• SAMTRAC / OHS Act Training
• Working at Heights & Confined Space Entry (if required)
• First Aid & Firefighting (basic)
• Experience
• 3+ years in heavy industry (oil & gas, mining, power plants)
• Experience with:
• Mobile cranes (all-terrain, crawler, telescopic)
• Overhead cranes & gantries
• Critical lifts (heavy/awkward loads)
