Position: Drilling and Blasting Superintendent
We are seeking for an experienced Drilling and Blasting Superintendent to join our team in Mashonaland West (Zimbabwe).
Operational Responsibilities:
Plan, coordinate, and supervise all drilling and blasting activities to support the mine production schedule.
Ensure drilling patterns and blast designs are executed according to mine design, geotechnical requirements, and regulatory standards.
Optimize drilling and blasting operations to achieve targeted fragmentation, slope stability, and production efficiency.
Oversee loading of explosives, stemming, tie-up, and firing of blasts in compliance with company and legal standards.
Manage drilling and blasting crews, equipment allocation, and consumables.
Coordinate closely with mine planning, operations, and maintenance teams to align daily and weekly production goals.
Conduct pre- and post-blast inspections and analyze blast performance, fragmentation, and environmental impacts.
Monitor drill and blast KPIs and implement improvement initiatives.
Safety & Compliance:
Enforce strict compliance with explosives handling, storage, and transportation regulations.
Manages Licenses and make sure all activity is according to the relevant standards
Promote a strong safety culture within drilling and blasting crews and ensure adherence to all company HSE standards.
Ensure the Drilling and Blasting SOP is properly implemented.
Coordinate Blasting Operations Security.
Conduct risk assessments, blast clearance checks, and pre-firing inspections.
Lead investigations into any incidents, misfires, or near misses and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
Ensure all personnel involved in drilling and blasting are competent, trained.
Environmental Responsibilities:
Ensure compliance with environmental regulations related to noise, vibration, fly rock, and dust control.
Coordinate blast scheduling to minimize impact on surrounding operations and communities.
Ensure proper handling and disposal of explosive packaging and related waste.
Monitor and report blast environmental performance in line with site requirements.
People & Resource Management:
Supervise and lead drilling and blasting supervisors, shotfirers, drill operators, and support personnel.
Manage shift rosters, crew assignments, and contractor activities.
Provide coaching, training, and performance feedback to team members.
Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Mining Engineering or related field. (Desirable not mandatory)
Minimum of 10 years of experience in open-pit mining operations, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or superintendent-level role in drilling and blasting, or relevant experience with EPSA Group.
Proven technical knowledge of drilling and blasting techniques, blast design, and explosives regulations.
Experience managing drilling fleets and blast crews.
Familiarity with mine planning and blast design software. (e.g., Surpac, BlastLogic, ShotPlus, or similar).
In-depth understanding of applicable safety and environmental standards.
Certified Shotfirer or Blasting License (recognized in Zimbabwe or equivalent).
Experience working with different rock types and production blasting in large open-pit environments.
Knowledge of different drilling rigs, explosives types, and blasting accessories.
Familiarity with vibration monitoring, blast optimization techniques, and regulatory reporting.
Experience in contract mining or remote site operations.
Leadership or operational management training (an asset).
