Shift: ALL (Standard Hours: 0600-1445, with a 45-minute lunch)

Rate of Pay: $24.00 per hour

 

DESCRIPTION:

Hutco, Inc., a leader in ship construction and repair, is seeking qualified Riggers (J1 - J4) to join our team in Norfolk, VA. We are looking for experienced riggers to fabricate, install, and repair rigging and weight handling gear aboard ships. This is a great opportunity to join a dynamic and skilled team.

RESPONSIBILITIES BY JOURNEYPERSON LEVEL:

Journeyperson 4 (Rigging)

  • Fabricate, install, and repair rigging and weight handling gear on ships.
  • Attach hoists and pulling gear to lift, move, remove, install, or position heavy equipment, machinery, and structural parts.
  • Select and attach chainfalls, jacks, rollers, levers, and pulleys based on load type.
  • Signal cranes or other equipment to move loads and control heavy equipment through narrow spaces.
  • Handle lines on cleats or bollards during ship dry docking operations.
  • Install or repair ships’ rigging, including mast antenna wires, small boat handling gear, cranes, winches, and replenishment equipment.
  • Move barges and derricks using tug boats and yard boats.
  • Work in confined spaces, engine rooms, boiler rooms, or at heights as required.
  • Thorough knowledge of rigging tools and materials such as shackles, ropes (natural, synthetic, and wire), steamboat jacks, turnbuckles, and chainfalls.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA standards for rigging operations.

Journeyperson 3 (Rigging)

  • Attach hoists and pulling gear to move, lift, or position heavy loads on ships.
  • Select appropriate equipment such as chainfalls, jacks, rollers, levers, and pulleys.
  • Signal cranes for load movement and guide equipment through confined spaces.
  • Assist in dry docking operations, handle lines, and move barges with tug boats.
  • Work in confined spaces, engine rooms, or at heights as necessary.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations applicable to rigging.

Journeyperson 2 (Rigging)

  • Attach hoists and pulling gear to move and position machinery, equipment, and structural parts.
  • Signal cranes and control equipment movement through narrow openings.
  • Assist in dry docking operations and move barges with tug boats.
  • Work in confined spaces or elevated locations as required.
  • Knowledge of rigging tools including shackles, chainfalls, ropes, turnbuckles, and crane signals.
  • Ability to splice ropes, tie knots, and operate forklifts and aerial lifts.
  • Proficient in the use of electric, pneumatic, and hand tools.

Journeyperson 1 (Rigging)

  • Assist in attaching hoists and pulling gear for lifting and positioning loads aboard ships.
  • Assist in moving equipment through confined spaces.
  • Help with line handling and staging erection operations on ships.
  • Work in various locations including engine rooms, boiler rooms, and confined spaces.
  • Basic knowledge of rigging tools and procedures, including splicing ropes and tying knots.
  • Ability to operate forklifts, aerial lifts, and use basic hand tools.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education/Training: High school diploma or equivalent; trade school or technical training in rigging preferred.
  • Experience: Experience in ship repair, shipbuilding, or industrial rigging preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Proficient in using rigging tools such as shackles, chainfalls, ropes, and cranes.
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
    • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations for rigging.
    • Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in varying weather conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift, carry, walk, climb, pull, and kneel.
  • Capable of working in confined spaces, on scaffolding, and at elevated locations.
  • Must have vision acuity sufficient to operate machinery and perform tasks requiring close visual attention.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Works in various environments including engine rooms, boiler rooms, elevated spaces, and confined areas on ships.
  • Exposed to varied weather conditions, dust, fumes, and moving machinery.
  • Safety equipment and PPE must be worn as per OSHA regulations.
